A group of second grade students from RPE experienced a visual arts connection to their reading curriculum as part of an enrichment program. Students were introduced to “gyotaku” which is the art of fish printing that was done long ago by Japanese fisherman to record their fresh catch. Students learned about Japanese culture through a unit that centered around the book, Taro-San the Fisherman and the Weeping Willow Tree. Students were truly able to experience a task that the character Taro-San would have done as a fisherman in his day…and they used a real fish as well!
