Saturday’s IHSAA 4A Semi-state match-up between the Southport Cardinals and New Albany Bull Dogs was a hard-fought, physical game but New Albany prevailed 82-to-64 due in part to the phenomenal play of its shooting guard, Romeo Langford. Langford, who averages 29-points per game, scored 46-points with some unbelievable outside shooting and strong interior play. Southport senior center, Joey Brunk, scored 22 in his last game as a Cardinal and junior, Paul Scruggs added 18.
Congratulations are in order for the Cards for a great season and for playing in the Semi-state for the first time since 1990. “Our season brought high school basketball respect back to the South side of Indianapolis again”, stated Cardinal coach, Kyle Simpson. Southport will lose three starters next season including Brunk, 3-point shooter, Luke Johnston and defensive specialists Eli Walton. Backup center, Evan Higgs, and point guard David Reyes are also graduating.
Congratulations to Coach Simpson, the players and staff and to retiring principal Barb Brouwer as well as Athletic Director, Pete Hubert, for a great run to the Final Four of Indiana High School Basketball.
