Homecroft Elementary has secured a grant from the American Heart Association for Teaching Gardens. The program will help raise an awareness of nutritional needs for children and adults. Some of the desired effects are an increase in fruit and vegetable consumption, more positive healthy behaviors in students, increased senses of responsibility, leadership, team building, confidence and self-esteem. Volunteers assisted with the construction of the garden boxes. After the boxes were filled with soil, the students planted broccoli, basil strawberries, cauliflower, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, Swiss chard, romaine, oregano, cabbage and red lettuce.
