Clinton Young students from Mrs. Marshall’s first-grade room recently applied their knowledge on the three states of matter to an experiment involving chocolate chips. Students noted the state of the chips at room temperature — 70 degrees and solid, then applied body heat by rubbing bags of chips between their hands. Using the classroom thermometer chart they knew that body temperature is about 99 degrees and by counting up they calculated pressure they applied 29 degrees of heat to the chips. The chocolate in the zip bags soon liquified. Students took notes and drew pictures of the changes. After leaving the bags on their desks for an hour, they were surprised to see the liquid chocolate had become a solid again in the absence of heat. This, of course, meant they could open the bags and eat the chocolate!
