Today Clinton Young Elementary in Perry Township became the only school in the state of Indiana, out of 341 entries, to win a $10,000 prize from Donors Choose and Code.org. The check was presented during an “all” school assembly Tuesday. Superintendent Dr. Thomas Little along with Assistant Superintendent Vickie Carpenter, Principal Andrea Korreck and computer teacher Mary Arnold accepted the donation on behalf of the school and district.
Others on the podium included Danielle Shockey and Eric Ogle with the Department of Education. Julie Booth and Kristin Bargenon with Accenture, Michelle Roberts and Simon Rhodes with IUPUI, Karen Jung with Code.org and Scott Davis DNR (Webmaster)
Principal Andrea Korreck explains how the process worked. “Code.org encourages science and technology, specifically the use of coding in schools.  Code sponsors one $10,000 award in each state to promote the event called “Hour of Code.”  Mrs. Arnold took the initiative to complete the grant application and was able to showcase the fact that ALL of our students participate in coding lessons through her computer class.  The grant is meant to expand the computer science environment for our students.  The money will be used to purchase computer equipment and accessories such as 3D printers and robotic equipment that students can program with lines of code.”

In addition, IUPUI will also be facilitating a partnership with our school and seeking additional grant opportunities through technology companies, such as Accenture, to secure even greater technology experiences for our students.
As a condition of the grant, Clinton Young will also be hosting an “Hour of Code” event at some point in the near future. To see several more pictures from the event log onto the Perry Township Schools Facebook page.
