Perry Township students and their parents are thinking about and focusing on the importance of post-secondary education as early age. Preparing our young students for college or vocational opportunities is vital that’s why the district offers college credit courses or dual credit courses at our high schools to give students a head start on their college careers.

It’s no wonder why we had over 300 students and their parents for our annual College Night at Perry Meridian Middle School Wednesday. Those who attended had a chance to learn about SAT and ACT testing, the admissions process, what courses of study to pursue, as well as the differences between private versus public education at the college level. There was also a great discussion about two year programs, certifications through C9 and Ivy Tech as well as the option of going into the military.  The main goal is to plan for some type of further education or training after high school in order to set yourself up for success and a high standard of living that will support and sustain individuals and families.

There was also discussion on the importance of a student’s grades and the classes they’re taking now in preparation for college. Also the importance of their GPA and what role it can play in the entire process including how it might impact where they go to school and what the costs’ might be.

The connections Perry Township Schools has to local colleges and universities is vital to keeping students on track for higher education. We’re very fortunate to have great relationships with many institutions of higher learning and we’re appreciative to the following institutions for sending representatives to assist our students and their families at this recent event including;

Purdue University, Indiana University, IUPUI, Butler University, Ball State University, Indiana State University, University of Indianapolis, Franklin College, Ivy Tech, Central Nine Career Center and The Indiana National Guard

Our presenters brought decades of experience to share with students to help with their college planning strategies. They offered tips for what colleges are looking for in a student and ways to make their higher education costs’ more affordable.  Kids are learning college can also be fun as well and some representatives discussed the extracurricular opportunities available at their particular schools.

Perhaps the best part about the event is that students had a chance to meet with college reps individually and get the latest info on which schools or majors might be best for them and why.

We would also like to thank our community partners for providing pizza and soft drinks for this important event that really gets middle school students talking about the importance of attending college.

It’s never too early to plan for college and one key factor in that process is saving money now to help your student achieve that dream of going to college. Congratulations to the PMMS staff for another great event.
