The Douglas MacArthur third graders have been studying poetry in their Language Arts classes. To conclude the lesson, and bring poetry to life, they created The Poetry Café. The atmosphere of the café was that of a beatnik poetry café. The lighting was low, and the students were attired in dark clothing – some with berets and dark sunglasses. Each student took the stage and read a poem that they had composed. The audience showed their appreciation by snapping their fingers rather than applauding. What a fun way to not only read and write poetry, but to experience it as well.
