Dr. Mendez, Principal of Southport Elementary, was one of 7 educators from around the country asked to go to Washington D.C. recently to inform members of congress about the important role grant funding plays in school and school district innovation.  Principal Mendez was asked to be one of the representatives because of the outstanding achievements of Southport Elementary.  Dr. Mendez also met with the US Department of Education to tell the story of Southport Elementary as well as provide input on how the US Department of Education can better serve schools around the country.  Secretary Arne Duncan was present for the beginning of the meeting.
