Fifth graders at Henry Burkhart Elementary School have been discussing the importance of estimation in both mathematics and our everyday lives. Students have reviewed estimates versus exact numbers, tested their estimates on distance, and shared how estimates are used every day when exact answers are impractical. One activity included estimating the number of steps it takes to walk around the exterior of the school building, testing our estimates and then using the information to make estimates of greater distances, such as walking to downtown Indianapolis.
