For those who knew her, Frieda Phelps was a people person.  She loved her students and her Perry family as much as her own family. Her students at SMS, under Helen Carter’s tenure as principal, loved her, also. Her prowess as a professional and representative for students and teachers was also known by several very prominent African-American dignitaries, Frank Anderson being one.  Frieda always had a positive attitude.  She exuded professionalism as a teacher and as a PEA leader.

When Terry Rice, former PEA President, decided to create an award to recognize building reps during the 2009-2010 school year, what better way to honor these representatives than by memorializing a dear friend, who was taken from us too early.  Thus, the Frieda Phelps Memorial Award, to recognize our PEA Building Representative of the year.

PES is honored and pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Frieda Phelps Memorial Award for the outstanding Building Representative of the 2013-2014 school year is Sue Buscemi, teacher at Winchester Village. Sue embodies the professionalism and collaborative attitude that has made PEA a respected association statewide. She’s done so much for teachers at WV and districtwide.

Thank you to Sue, and all of the valuable PEA Building Representatives, for continuing to represent our teachers, students, and school corporation in the most positive light.
