From the Indy Star

A couple notes on the Southport at Warren Central football game tonight for the Sectional 7 championship:

• This is the first meeting between the programs since 1986, though the rivalry dates back to 1940. Southport dominated the early games in the series, but Warren won 18 of the last 23 (and 10 in a row) to take a 23-22-2 overall lead. Warren Central finished 9-3 in 1986, while Southport was 4-6.

• Southport’s last win in the series was 33-21 on Oct. 27, 1976, in the season finale. When the teams last met in 1986 they were coached by Ken Haupt (Southport) and Jerry Stauffer (Warren Central), both Indiana Football Hall of Fame coaches.

Warren Central (7-3) is ranked No. 7 in Class 6A and Southport (8-2) is No. 8.

Coach Bill Peebles and his staff held a final practice, Thursday, before Friday’s big game at Warren at 7 pm. Fans can tailgate at 5:45 at Warren Central.  Tickets at the game are $6 dollars.
