The high ability students in Mrs. Melissa Summitt’s 3rd grade class at Homecroft Elementary worked during math stations with a parent volunteer, Mrs. Dana Lynn Hiller, on a place value detective project. The students became engaged and loved the project so much that they decided to create a similar project of their own in which the rest of their classmates could participate. The students had to first solve a place value problem in which clues were given to determine the culprit of a crime. Once solved correctly, they were given a clue as to where the next place value problem would be found in the school. The high ability students used higher order and creative thinking to create both the place value problems and clues on their own. Way to go kids!
