“Ladies and gentlemen start your engines”, said the announcer and that’s exactly what dozens of kindergarten students did at Rosa Parks Elementary Friday. However they simulated the engine sounds with their mouths. Once the flag was dropped they were off, wearing their pretend Indycars, in what was the first ever KIndy 500 an activity the school plans to make an annual event.

The students painted and decorated their cars with help from their 4th grade buddies who had been studying Indiana history. Prior to the race, the kindergarten students enjoyed learning about the history of the Indianapolis 500 and about science concepts such as force and motion. After they paraded through the school to show their unique cars, the students raced around the track, speed walking, while being cheered on by families and 4th grade buddies. There were a lot of smiles on a lot of faces and the top three finishers in each race was awarded a medal. It was a perfect day for the first of its kind race.
