Mrs. Hope Maled’s 1st grade class at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School practiced counting pennies, nickels and dimes in the “M & S General Store.”  Students had 35 “cents” to shop for items such as ring pops, cell phone cases and calculators.  After choosing items for purchase, the “shoppers” headed to the “check-out line.”  They were greeted by 5th grade “cashiers” who helped them count their money and make change.  The first graders left with their purchases, a receipt, a shopping bag and a better understanding of how to count coins not to mention with a big smile on their face!
