Hundreds of Southport High School students had the opportunity Thursday to be exposed to a wide range of careers at the second annual SHS Career Fair. Southport counselors, who put on the event, say attendance and interest has increased. “Last year we had 36 presenters in attendance, representing 31 companies with 136 students there”, stated Southport counselor, Briana Underwood. “This year, we had 73 presenters, representing 53 companies and 56 different job titles with 286 students attending”. Underwood says partnering with many different companies not only shows students what types of careers are available but helps build community partnerships for our schools. Six of Thursday’s presenters happend to be SHS alums.
Dozens of companies and organizations were represented including, FedEx, UPS, All State Insurance, Paul Mitchell, C-9, and the Greenwood Airport as well as various manufacturing companies located throughout central Indiana. Perry Township Schools were also represented. H.R. Director Rhonda Jones-Jointer talked to students regarding the various careers available working for a school district including teachers, staff and administration. Perry Township technology director, Matt Willey, was also on hand with e-learning specialists, David Bagwell, to answer students questions about careers in I.T. Underwood says the goal is to continue building community partnerships while maintaining the positive relationships already established and most importantly show students good paying careers they might not have thought of.
