Twenty-three SHS publications students traveled to Washington, D.C. for the JEA/NSPA (Journalism Education Association/ National Scholastic Press Association) Fall Convention, where they attended specialized classes, listened to a keynote speech by ESPN SportsCenter anchor Jay Harris, and competed in contests.
Four SHS seniors placed in the contests. Honorable mention awards went to Vanessa Abplanalp (editorial writing). Excellent awards went to Maddison Bethel-Brown (photography portfolio) and Tori Updike (copy editing, caption and headline writing) and Nathan Cooper (yearbook copy/caption: academics).
While in Washington, the students also toured the U.S. Capital building, toured the sites along the length of the National Mall, and visited the “Newseum”.
