On Veterans Day, Clinton Young first graders in Mrs. Marshall’s class set a “White Table” to honor all veterans who have served our country. The idea stems from a book by Margot Theis-Raven about young girl’s uncle who served in the Vietnam War. Items included an empty place setting, red rose, downturned glass, lemon, salt, and a black napkin. Items signified a veteran’s service, honor, courage, tears, struggles, and sacrifice. After setting the table, students spontaneously receited the “Pledge of Allegiance.” Later in the day, they wrote thank you notes to area vets. Students asked that the table be left in place until Thanksgiving as a reminder of those who are currently serving our country and are away from their families.
