Elective Choices for 7th Grade

6th Graders will use the form linked below to select electives for their 7th grade school year (this link becomes active Feb 23, 2023). All 6th graders will receive a copy of this informative letter (translated version – Spanish, Swahili, Arabic) and watch this informative video to explain the process!



SCHEDULING INFORMATION:

Electives are offered in Art, PE, and Technology. Students must complete the above linked Google Form in early March to indicate their preferences. Preferences DO NOT guarantee placement due to class size limits.

 

Art – the focus is on 2 dimensional art techniques and materials. Students work on skills in shading, perspective, and more using graphite pencils, colored pencils, paint, and markers. Students also complete one 3 dimensional project to round out their experience. You can watch this video to learn more about SMS Art!

Digital Exploration – digital citizenship, advanced skills with Google and Canvas, internet research, typing, and making slideshows and/or brochures as you complete various projects. You can watch this video to learn more about SMS DE!

Project Lead the Way (7th grade) – this class is App Creators covering computer program coding, other project-based learning, and presentations. This class is a great fit for those who enjoy the challenge of problem solving and reasoning. You can watch this video to learn more about SMS PLTW!

Physical Education – PE is required for one semester in each 7th & 8th grade. A second semester is offered as an elective if the student would like to take PE as a full year class. Each semester will contain a small amount of Health curriculum taught in a classroom. Lessons differ slightly each semester. Dress in PE uniform shirts and shorts is required for all classes.

Placement in core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies is determined by grades, test scores, and school staff. Additionally, participation in our Music Ensembles is a year-long commitment made by March 1st for the following year. Please contact your child’s current Music teacher with any questions orĀ  concerns.
