INCLEMENT WEATHER INFORMATION

The safety of our students and staff is our top priority. When inclement weather is expected, Perry Township Schools carefully reviews conditions across the township before making decisions about delays, closures, or schedule changes.

HOW DECISIONS ARE MADE

Because weather can vary throughout the district, decisions are made based on what is safest for the entire school community.

• Current and forecasted weather
• Road conditions
• Bus route conditions
• Access to school buildings
• Temperature and wind chill conditions

WIND CHILL CONSIDERATIONS

When extreme cold is expected, the district refers to National Weather Service wind chill data to help guide decisions about delays, closures, or e-learning days. Wind chill is especially important when considering student safety while waiting at bus stops, walking to school, or moving between buildings.

There is no single temperature or snowfall amount that automatically triggers a delay or closure. Each weather event is evaluated individually using the full set of conditions at the time. Each decision is made carefully, with student safety as the primary focus.

Wind Chill Chart showing how cold it feels based on temperature (°F) and wind speed (mph). As wind speed increases, the perceived temperature drops significantly. For example, at 0°F with 20 mph wind, it feels like -22°F. The chart also highlights frostbite risk zones, with darker shades indicating faster frostbite times (30, 10, and 5 minutes).

DECISION AND COMMUNICATION TIMELINE

District officials begin driving roads throughout Perry Township at or before 4:00 a.m. to assess travel safety for both buses and cars. If conditions require a delay, cancellation, or e-learning day, an announcement will be issued by 5:30 a.m. through the following channels:

DELAYS, CLOSURES, AND E-LEARNING

In some cases, a delay or closure may result in an e-learning day.
If this occurs:

  •  The district will communicate whether the day will be a delayed start, full closure, or e-learning day.
  •  When a 2-hour delay is announced, an update will be provided by 7:30 a.m. should the schedule change to a full closure or e-learning  day.

For e-learning days, teachers will provide assignments and instructions directly to students.

For the most up-to-date information during inclement weather, please monitor official Perry Township Schools communication channels.

Thank you for your attention and cooperation as we work to navigate the winter season with safety and minimal disruption. The well-being of our students and staff remains our highest priority in Perry Township Schools.
