Drama Club
Southport Drama Club
Southport Drama Club is a club that offers students of Southport 6th Grade Academy and Southport Middle School the opportunity to explore their interest in theatre and the Dramatic Arts. The group meets after school on Wednesdays (2:30-3:30) in the auditorium.
Meetings consist of activities such as playing group games designed to build a variety of theatrical skills, learning about different roles and careers in theatre, practicing acting and improvisation skills and team building exercises. Attendees are expected to participate in the activities.
Any student in good standing is welcome to attend drama club meetings. Registration is not required. Participants are expected to adhere to school rules and behavior guidelines.
Students working towards the goal of being inducted into the Junior Thespian Society MUST regularly attend drama club meetings as participation contributes to membership points qualification. Junior Thespians are part of the Indiana Chapter of the International Thespian Society. To qualify, students must attend drama club meetings AND be a cast or crew member of the school plays. Outside theatre experience can also contribute to qualification for induction. Junior Thespians are inducted in May of each school year.
Junior Thespians have the opportunity to participate in the annual International Thespian Society’s play competition. Placing in the regional competition qualifies the school to move on to the state level competition. Drama club students not yet inducted into Junior Thespians may also audition for parts in the competition play. Rehearsals for this competition will begin in August. The competition will take place in November/December.
Additionally, we will produce a full length play during the spring semester which will be performed for the public. Drama club members are encouraged to participate as cast and crew members. Audition information for the plays will be sent out via school announcements, school social media and Parent Square in the weeks prior to the events.
Participating in school plays is a big commitment – similar to playing a school sport. It requires attending many after school rehearsals and practices as well as time spent preparing at home (rehearsing lines, practicing blocking, etc.). There is also a financial responsibility of approximately $50 per play to cover the costs of scripts, royalties, t-shirts, etc. all of this information will be outlined in detail at the time of audition. Please note: due to the limited number of roles, not everyone who auditions will be selected.
