Perry Township Policy – Electronic Devices

Perry Township Schools allows for the use of personally owned electronic devices with school official authorization. Taking photos and audio or video recording on any device are strictly prohibited unless explicitly authorized by school officials. School administration reserves the right to search the contents of any device if there is reasonable suspicion that the search will reveal evidence of other violations of other school rules beyond the cell phone use violation. Any use of personally owned devices on school grounds remains subject to the Acceptable Use Policy. Students are responsible for the security of their device. Student owned devices remain personal property and the school corporation holds no responsibility to repair or replace. Unauthorized use of electronic devices brought to school or used on the bus may result in disciplinary action as well as confiscation. Electronic devices must be picked up no later than the end of that given school year.

High School Policy – Personal Communication Devices

The usage of personal communication devices (PCDs), such as cell phones, earbuds, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, and wearable technology, will be prohibited during instructional time. Students are expected to bring their district-issued Chromebooks to class. Personal PCDs are prohibited unless approved by the teacher while they are in the learning environment/classroom.

In some very unique situations, students with identified disabilities or medical needs may be required to keep a PCD with them during the school day. These situations are approved at the discretion of the case conference or 504 committee and will only be considered when necessary to meet specific, documented needs in rare circumstances.

At any point during the school day (especially in an emergency), caregivers can call the main office line of the school to communicate any necessary information.

Perry Township 9-12 Personal Communication Device (PCD) Expectations for Students

Students will bring their charged district issued Chromebooks to class daily. PCDs are not allowed in the classroom (outside of previously mentioned exceptions); PCDs are allowed in non-classroom areas if they do not disrupt the school environment. Recording devices must not be used inappropriately, and unauthorized recordings may lead to disciplinary action. At no time are students to take a picture or video of an individual during the school day without the permission of that individual or the school, unless directed to do so by a teacher as part of the curriculum or for use in a school publication.Devices are not to be out for any reason in any area where there is an expectation of privacy (i.e. locker room, bathroom).

Cell phones/electronic devices must be turned OFF or in Silent Mode/Airplane Mode and put away when the bell rings to start class and before entering any office or instructional area including the Athletic office, School Counseling office, library, locker rooms, computer/science lab areas, auditorium, etc. Students may use their phones at the discretion of the classroom teacher as it relates to an instructional focus.

When students are in the aforementioned locations, their cell phones/electronic devices must be stored in a location that is not visible to the teacher or other students, even though the device is in the OFF or SILENT MODE. Students taking PE and/or Weight Training must secure their devices in a locker with a lock. Students may only use their devices with teacher approval. Approval must be obtained prior to accessing the device.

Consequences for students using a PCD in violation of this policy are included below as a suggested path towards building a balance between leveraging electronic devices for educational purposes with minimal disruption in the classroom and fostering essential collaborative and social-emotional skills.

  • 1st offense: Verbal warning, caregiver contacted by teacher via ParentSquare
  • 2nd offense: Classroom documentation with caregiver contact by teacher via phone call
  • 3rd offense: Student Conduct Referral, caregiver/student conference with administrator
  • 4th offense: Student Conduct Referral, device confiscated by Student Services staff and returned to student at the end of the instructional day
  • 5th offense: Student Conduct Referral, ISS for the remainder of the period, device confiscated by Student Services staff and returned to caregiver
  • 6th offense and beyond: Student Conduct Referral, device confiscated and returned to caregiver with progressive consequences

Consequences for students using a PCD in an inappropriate manner in non-instructional areas (hallway, cafeteria, restroom, locker room etc) will be subjected to disciplinary action by the school administration including but not limited to search of the device, seizure of the device and school based consequences.
