ELEMENTARY READING AND WRITING CURRICULUM K-5

Perry Township Schools has adopted the Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) program, which aligns with the science of reading and incorporates its essential components. The program is structured around the five pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

For Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades, the curriculum places a strong emphasis on foundational skills. These students engage in a 60-minute block dedicated to phonemic awareness and phonics, followed by another 60-minute block focused on building knowledge. Third-grade students experience an integrated 120-minute block that seamlessly blends skills and knowledge. For fourth and fifth graders, the program allocates a 90-minute block specifically dedicated to knowledge acquisition.

This comprehensive approach ensures that students at all grade levels receive a balanced and thorough reading education, fostering both their skills and content knowledge to support literacy development.
